ACP-EC Council meets in Brussels
ČLÁNEK JE K DISPOZICI POUZE V ANGLIČTINĚ: The ACP-EC Council of Ministers met on 28 -29 May in Brussel for its 34 th session under the chairmanship of Wiliam Haomae, Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade of Solomon Islands and Co-President of the ACP-EC Council of Ministers. The meeting was co-chaired for the European Community by Helena Bambasová, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and President-in-Office of the Council of the European Union.
The European Commission was represented by Catherine Ashton, Commissioner for Trade (on Thursday 28 May) and Olli Rehn, Commissioner responsible for Development and Humanitarian Aid (on Friday 29 May).
One of the most important issues discussed during the Council was the question of Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs). It was agreed that an important progress had been achieved in the past 12 months but we must continue to focus on the challenges ahead of us.
The EU and the ACP have agreed that the debate will bring new dynamics into the EPAs process, both as regards the interim EPAs and the ongoing negotiations of comprehensive regional EPAs.
The Council also explored the possibility of creating an ACP Peace Facility and discussed the negative effects of the current global economic and financial crisis, adopting a resolution. It also adopted a declaration on climate change, stating that the current and future responses to tackle climate change will have major financial implications. The EU confirmed its readiness to bear a fair share of the financial burden in the framework of a global and comprehensive Copenhagen agreement in December 2009 and help create an appropriate burden sharing arrangement between the EU, other developed countries and the most advanced developing countries.
It also officialy launched negotiations on the second revision of the Cotonou Agreement with the objective to completing them, as stipulated by the Cotonou Agreement, by the end of February 2010.
