The EU - Georgia Human rights dialogue was launched
ČLÁNEK SE PŘEKLÁDÁ: The first human rights dialogue meeting between Georgia and the European Union took place on 28 April 2009 in Tbilisi.
The EU delegation was lead by Ms Gabriela Dlouhá, Head of Human Rights and Transition Policy Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, and further included Ms Riina Kionka, Personal Representative for Human Rights of the EU Secretary General/High Representative and Mr. Rolf Timans, Head of Human Rights and Democratization Unit of the European Commission as well as Mr. Jan Nordlander, Human Rights Ambassador, representing the incoming Swedish Presidency. The Georgian delegation was headed by the Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Alexander Nalbandov.
During the dialogue, the two sides discussed among other issues the reform of the judicial system, enforcement of national human rights legislation, rights of prisoners, freedom of association and assembly, freedom of religion, freedom of expression and media, protection of IDPs and the humanitarian situation following the war in August.
During the working lunch both sides discussed their cooperation on international human rights fora, including United Nations and Council of Europe.
The dialogue was held in an open and constructive atmosphere, with in-depth exchanges on a wide range of issues of mutual interest or concern, as well as consideration of possibilities for concrete cooperation in the future. Both sides agreed to continue in these fruitful and result-oriented talks in the future as well as to organize regular civil society seminars.
