Declaration by the European Union and Canada on Guatemala
We express our deep concern at the worsening situation of violence and impunity in Guatemala and our disquiet at the present state of growing political and social unrest in the country.
We urge that an impartial and independent investigation be carried out into the recent acts of violence. We support the Guatemalan government's request to the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) to assist in the investigation and we reiterate our full backing for the CICIG.
An independent judicial system is of crucial importance in combating the high levels of impunity in the country. We ask all state institutions to take the decisions necessary to ensure the independence and effectiveness of Guatemala's judicial system.
We reiterate our support for all those endeavouring to maintain and strengthen democratic institutions, which are vital for peace and development in the country, and to build a state governed by the rule of law for all Guatemalans.
Declaración de la Unión Europea y Canadá sobre Guatemala
Expresamos nuestra profunda preocupación por el agravamiento de la situación de violencia e impunidad en el país y manifestamos nuestra inquietud por la presente situación de creciente conflictividad política y social en Guatemala.
Apelamos a los distintos sectores de la sociedad de Guatemala de enfrentar la crisis con cordura, prudencia y madurez.
Instamos una investigación imparcial e independiente a la altura de los recientes actos de violencia. Respaldamos la solicitud del Gobierno de Guatemala a la Comisión Internacional contra la Impunidad en Guatemala (CICIG) de acompañar la investigación y reiteramos nuestro pleno respaldo a la CICIG.
Un sistema de justicia independiente es fundamental para combatir los altos niveles de impunidad en el país. Solicitamos a todas las instituciones del Estado tomar las decisiones necesarias para garantizar la independencia y eficacia del sistema de justicia de Guatemala.
Reiteramos nuestro respaldo a todos los que se esfuerzan por conservar y fortalecer la institucionalidad democrática - fundamental para la paz y el desarrollo del país- y la construcción de un Estado de Derecho en beneficio de todos los guatemaltecos.
