Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the EU on Madagascar
The European Union is deeply concerned at the disturbances, the loss of human life and the destruction that have occurred in Madagascar and offers its sympathy to the Madagascan people, who are facing difficult circumstances.
It urges all parties to engage in dialogue and to show restraint.
The EU reaffirms its commitment to respect for human rights, democratic principles and the rule of law, these being the key elements of the Cotonou Agreement which links all ACP countries and the EU.
It calls on Madagascar's authorities, political forces and civil society to overcome this crisis through dialogue in accordance with the law and constitutional rules, and to continue the reforms that are needed to respond to the urgent calls for greater social justice and democracy and the sound management of public affairs.
The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Armenia and Georgia align themselves with this declaration.
* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
