Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the EU on the opening in the Inter-American Court on Human Rights
Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the EU on the opening in the Inter-American Court on Human Rights of the Case of Campo Algodonero on femicide in Ciudad Juarez
The EU welcomes the start of the Campo Algodonero trial at the Inter-American Court on Human Rights in its XXXIX extraordinary session from 27 to 30 April 2009. This case constitutes an important milestone in the fight against all forms of violence against women because it is the first instance in which the murders of women in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, are to be analysed. The Court will consider three women as presumed victims in this case, namely: Esmeralda Herrera Monreal; Claudia Ivette González; and Laura Berenice Ramos Monárrez, who disappeared and were murdered in 2001.
The EU is committed to the fight against all forms of violence and discrimination against women and girls, as demonstrated by the adoption on 8 December 2008 of the EU Guidelines on Violence Against Women and Girls and Combating All Forms of Discrimination Against Them. The EU encourages the Mexican authorities to ensure their good cooperation with the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania and Montenegro and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Armenia and Georgia align themselves with this declaration.
* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
