EU Presidency Statement on recent developments in Swat
The Presidency of the Council expresses its support to the Government of Pakistan and welcomes the recent strengthening of its engagement in the Swat Valley to cleanse the area from insurgency and reverse the upsurge of terrorism.
We recognize the sacrifices connected to the great burden Pakistan is facing regarding the improvement of the security situation.
At the same time, the EU calls on the Government of Pakistan to pay close attention to the present situation of internally displaced people, as well as the protection of human rights. The EU reiterates that the Government of Pakistan should continue in its efforts to strengthen civil society mechanisms, which would help Pakistan improve the life of its citizens, would support stable and sustainable development, and would offer encouragement to Pakistan’s long-suffering population, as well as Pakistan’s partners, and the international community.
