EU Presidency Statement on the elections in Montenegro

The Presidency of the Council of the EU welcomes the peaceful and orderly conduct of the early parliamentary elections in Montenegro on 29 March 2009.

It notes the preliminary assessment by the OSCE/ODIHR Election Observation mission that the elections were organised freely and fairly and met almost all international commitments and standards.

The Presidency considers the democratic conduct of the election important for the progress of Montenegro on the path of European integration. It encourages the future government to pursue the European agenda and to maximize its effort in implementing the related reforms.
