EU Presidency Statement on the events in Guinea-Bissau
The Presidency condemns the assassinations of the President of Guinea-Bissau, Joao Bernardo Vieira, and the Chief of the Armed Forces, General Tagmé na Waié.
It offers its sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and to the people of Guinea-Bissau.
These attacks come at a time of increased EU and international engagement intended to build a democratic and stable Guinea-Bissau. The EU urges all the political and military authorities to respect the constitutional order and to exercise maximum restraint in order to enable a return to stability and the democratic process.
The European Union stands ready to support the Guinea-Bissau authorities in peacefully resolving the current situation in cooperation with international organizations present in the region.
