EU Presidency Statement prior the April 9 demonstration in Tbilisi

In the context of the opposition demonstration announced for 9 April 2009 in Tbilisi, the Presidency of the Council of the European Union calls on all the parties concerned, including the Government of Georgia, the organizers, and the participants of the demonstration, to act in responsible and peaceful manner and exercise maximum restraint, with due regard to public order and relevant legislation.

The Presidency emphasizes that full respect to freedom of assembly and freedom of expression is one of the core values shared by the democratic countries. The Presidency reiterates that people of Georgia can but benefit from political pluralism and constructive political dialogue between the Government and the opposition.
