Brno first to host a Special Committee on Agriculture meeting
The very first meeting of the Special Committee on Agriculture of the EU Council in the Czech Republic took place in the rotunda of the Brno Exhibition Centre ahead of tomorrow's meeting of Ministers.
The representatives of the 27 EU Member States in the Special Committee on Agriculture meet each Monday in Brussels to prepare ministerial meetings held in Brussels or Luxembourg every month.
The Czech Presidency has chosen a very important and hot issue for the Brno meeting of the Committee: "Future Policy on Agricultural Products and Foods Quality ". The topic includes a debate on the future of protected quality assurance labels. As regards the protection of traditional products such as Czech beer, Marienbad wafers or Pohorelice carp, the Czech Republic ranks among the most successful states that acceded to the EU in recent years. It has made sustained efforts to push for EU programmes that would lend more support to farmers and food producers who make premium products.
Today's meeting reaffirmed some important interests in this field, e.g. interest in the provision of reliable and complete information to consumers, improved protection of European products against forgeries and the need to simplify and shorten demanding administrative procedures. Based on the outcomes of today's meeting, the Czechs will attempt to use the remaining weeks of their Presidency to coordinate a common position of all the Member States on the proposals presented by the European Commission last week.
