EU Presidency statement on the election result in Israel (10 February 2009)
The Presidency congratulates the winners of Israel’s general election yesterday.
The European Union considers Israel one of its important partners and looks forward to further developing this relationship. In particular, it looks forward to working with the new Israeli administration to achieve the most important goal of all – a peaceful resolution of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. We hope that the new Israeli government will honour the obligations taken by Israel under the Roadmap and at Annapolis and refrain from measures rendering a two-state solution impossible.
The Presidency encourages the incoming Israeli government to pursue all efforts leading towards the creation of an independent, democratic, contiguous and viable Palestinian State living side by side with Israel in peace and security.
The European Union, in close cooperation with its partners in the Quartet and in the region, stands ready to offer all its support in this process and to promote security and peace for Israelis and Palestinians alike.
