Presidency and Commission consider convening informal European Council
Speaking on the phone, Czech PM and European Council President M. Topolánek today agreed with European Commission President Barroso on the idea of calling an informal summit of EU.
The summit is expected to address joint action by the EU in fighting the consequences of the financial crisis. “The aim of the meeting of Heads of State and Government is to assess the efficiency of measures taken so far under the Recovery Plan in cushioning the impacts of the financial crisis and, above all, to agree on a coordinated approach to all measures subsequently adopted by individual Member States”, said the Czech Prime Minister. “I am convinced that – as all of us have been swept over by the crisis, we can only emerge out of it with new force if we act together and respect the rules of the internal market – the internal market is the long-term instrument that will help us overcome the crisis.”
Mirek Topolánek will discuss the idea of convening an informal European Council in person with José Manuel Barroso in Brussels on Wednesday, 11 February. If the Czech Presidency and the European Commission confirm their decision, the extraordinary summit will probably take place in Brussels already before the end of February
