“Back to School”
The “Back to School” project is an initiative of the European Commission which aims to bring the European Union closer to secondary school students and give their institutions a face by means of meetings with Czech citizens working in EU institutions. On Friday 15 May 2009, more than sixty Czech officials will return to their old schools to speak not only about the European Union itself, but also about their experiences gained while working for the EU institutions.
The “Back to School” initiative started in 2007 during the German Presidency of the EU Council. It was launched by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in order to inform the students on the working of the EU and on programmes of interest to them, such as Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci, Youth in Action etc.
This year’s project, organised by the European Commission together with the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, will also include Czech Minister of Education Miroslava Kopicová, who will talk to students of the Kadaň Comprehensive School at 2 p.m., or Minister for European Affairs Štefan Füle, who will hold a discussion from 10:00 in the Karlovy Vary Comprehensive School. The Representation of the European Commission in the Czech Republic will be represented by its Head Irena Moozová, who will share her experience from working for the European Commission with students of the English College in Prague.
This year the initiative is organised as a part of the project a Spring Day for Europe – Jaro Evropy 2009. The project Spring Day for Europe is organised every year and aims to encourage schools to set aside one or more days to organise events that focus on the debate on European issues while emphasising the important elements of interactivity and proactive response.
