Commissioner Borg to learn about Czech fishpond management
On Monday 27 April, Joe Borg, the European Commissioner responsible for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, will arrive in the Czech Republic. During his visit the Commissioner will learn about fishpond management in southern Bohemia, and discuss freshwater aquaculture in the Czech Republic with Agriculture Minister Petr Gandalovič.
The European Fisheries Commissioner Joe Borg, together with the Czech Minister for Agriculture, will visit the unique South Bohemian fishpond system. Here, in the natural environment of the Třeboň Basin, carp farming in particular relies on centuries-old technological procedures which have made carp a traditional product of South Bohemia. The breeding ponds are supplied by the unique Zlatá stoka (Golden Conduit) in the catchment of the Lužnice River.
On their joint working visit, the Commissioner and the Minister will visit the production business Rybářství Třeboň, a.s., the largest fishery not only in the Czech Republic, but also in Europe. This fishery manages around 7,440 hectares of ponds with annual fish production of 2,900 tonnes (of which 92% is carp). The company makes active use of grant schemes designed to promote and develop fisheries in the Czech Republic. Under the Agriculture Operational Programme, more than CZK 8.7 million has been paid to 16 projects. These projects have mainly focused on the purchase of equipment needed to carry out fishery operations.
“The greatest achievement of Czech fish farming in the EU is perhaps the registration of the name Třeboňský kapr (Třeboň Carp) in the register of protected geographical indications within the EU. This success will help promote the Třeboň carp in the Czech Republic and on foreign markets,” said Minister of Agriculture Petr Gandalovič.
During his visit to the Czech Republic, Joe Borg will attend the international conference Maritime Clusters in Landlocked Countries, to be held under the Czech EU Council Presidency at the Liechtenstein Palace in Prague on Monday 27 April.
