Czech EU Presidency “tour des capitales” begins today in Latvia
Today and tomorrow, Minister for European Affairs Štefan Füle will visit the three Baltic states and Finland.
Today in Latvia he met with Latvian Foreign Ministry State Secretary Andris Teikmanis; this afternoon he participated in a meeting with Minister for European Affairs and Migration Astrid Thors in Finland. Tomorrow morning he will meet with President Valdas Adamkus and Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius in Lithuania. He will conclude his tour in Estonia where he will meet with Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet. The topics of the discussion will include the preparation of the European Council including climate change and economy issues as well as the strategy for the Baltic region.
This trip is the first in a series of official visits of Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Jan Kohout and European Affairs Minister Štefan Füle to their EU counterparts known as the tour des capitales. The main objective is to prepare the upcoming European Council meeting (Brussels, 18 – 19 June) and to discuss related topics. Some of the EU leaders will meet Czech representatives in Prague.
Minister Štefan Füle will meet Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák on 1 June in Prague. The Minister will also visit Romania and Hungary on 5 June, Great Britain on 9 June and Spain and Portugal on 12 June; he will take part in the General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) in Luxembourg on 15 June and in the European Council on 18 – 19 June in Brussels.
