Energy discussed by EU-Russia Permanent Partnership Council

Moscow hosted the fourth meeting of the EU-Russia Permanent Partnership Council for energy today.

The aim of the meeting was to continue the dialogue on joint initiatives in the energy sector and to share ideas on the future development of mutual relations in this area.
The meeting chaired by Czech Industry and Trade Minister Martin Říman was also attended by Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, Swedish industry minister Maud Olofsson and Russian energy minister Sergey Shmatko. The main points on the agenda included the extension of the early warning mechanism and the continued existence of the agreement on the monitoring of gas flows from Russia to the EU via Ukraine.

“Russia and the EU depend, and will depend, on each other in the energy sector. Therefore, we need to find a way to avoid situations similar to the January gas crisis. To secure stable energy supplies, the energy infrastructure that connects the EU and Russia must be reliable and new transport routes must be developed”, says Minister Martin Říman.
“To restore the trust of European consumers, it is also necessary to adopt specific measures that will chase away the concerns caused by the interrupted oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline and the reduced gas supplies to Poland”, added Minister Martin Říman.

The Permanent Partnership Council gave its support to the continued existence of the agreement on the monitoring of the flow of Russian gas to the EU via Ukraine today. Both parties further share the conviction that it is necessary to extend the early warning mechanism arranged at the May 2007 EU-Russia summit in Samara. The extension of this mechanism is a priority of the EU-Russia Energy Dialogue in 2009, and its formal aspects should be approved at the EU-Russia summit in Khabarovsk. The extension of the early warning mechanism will make ongoing monitoring of energy supplies from Russia possible.
