EU-U.S. Foreign Ministers’ Joint Statement on Legislation in Afghanistan

Noting the significant progress since 2002 on the status of women in Afghanistan, the European Union and the United States express their serious common concern with the law proposed in Afghanistan on “Shi’ite Personal Status”.

The EU and U.S. remain wholly committed to ensuring that all citizens of Afghanistan, women and men equally, benefit in full from their fundamental universal human and democratic rights.  The EU and U.S. urge Afghanistan to continue on its path of progress.
