European Affairs Minister Štefan Füle to visit Sweden
Sweden is the destination of the first official visit of Czech Minister for European Affairs Štefan Füle on Monday, 11 May 2009.
Accepting the invitation of Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs Cecilia Malmström, Minister Füle will attend a meeting of the sextet – six subsequent Presidency Member States – in Malmö. The Minister will also speak at the Europaforum international conference in Hässleholm on the occasion of the five-year anniversary of the "big" EU enlargement.
The sextet, i.e., the meeting of two subsequent Trio Presidencies (the current Trio Presidency of France, the Czech Republic and Sweden, and the subsequent Trio Presidency of Spain, Belgium and Hungary), was set up in September 2006 to reinforce cooperation between the Presidency countries and aims to increase the degree of continuity between the rotating Presidencies.
The aim of the sextet meeting in Malmö is to present the progress achieved in the preparations of the Swedish Presidency and to informally discuss the agenda of the General Affairs Council (GAC). European Affairs Minister Füle will inform the participants of the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty by the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. Other topics of the meeting will include competitiveness, climate and energy.
Europaforum (11 through 14 May 2009) is a traditional conference established several years ago in Hässleholm in southern Sweden. It aims to support the idea of European integration and the use of opportunities offered by membership in the EU. It is attended by ministers, MEPs, representatives of the European Commission, municipalities, regions, universities and NGOs. European Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn will be among the speakers this year.
