European experts to discuss implementation of the directive on the assessment and management of flood risks
On 25 – 26 May, Brno will host a thematic workshop of the Working Group on Floods. European experts on flood protection will discuss first steps of EU Member States in implementing the new European Directive 2007/60/EC on the assessment and management of flood risks.
The workshop will provide a platform for the experts to deal with preliminary flood risk assessments and subsequent mapping and drawing up of flood risk management plans in areas that face significant flood risks.
The delegates will also discuss how to use knowledge and experiences from historical floods, set flood risks for all types of floods occurring in EU Member States, determine ways of informing the public, provide information within the EU, and secure interconnection with existing water and spatial planning with regard to climate change in Europe.
The Working Group on Floods was established 2 years ago as a part of the Common Implementation Strategy for water policy to support implementation of the abovementioned directive 2007/60/EC and it is convened twice a year. Thematic workshops are organised to strengthen exchange of experiences with the implementation of this directive.
“The first workshop on the Floods Directive took place in Dublin in September 2008 and the second workshop is organised by the Czech Presidency in Brno, where the International Water Management and Ecological Fair WATENVI, the largest event addressing issues of water in the Czech Republic is held at the same time,” stated Veronika Jáglová, the Director of the Department of Water Protection at the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic. The WATENVI fair will include practical demonstrations of anti-flood measures as well as an international conference on Flood Control Principles in the World in 2009 with a number of speakers from abroad.
