Environment Ministers from Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Canada, Russia, China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, South Africa, Australia, the Republic of Korea and Egypt will meet from 22 to 24 April 2009 in Syracuse, Italy. Czech Environment Minister Martin Bursík will represent the Czech EU Presidency at the meeting.
Combating climate change and protecting biodiversity are the two main issues to be discussed at the meeting. The aim of the Syracuse meeting is to provide an opportunity to discuss and make progress in the debate on combating climate change and preserving biodiversity, the two most important environmental questions on the international political agenda. The Syracuse G8 Environment Ministers' meeting should accordingly send an important political message on biodiversity and facilitate dialogue on climate change regarding the way to Copenhagen 2009.
Italy chairs the debate which, while taking into account the global economic and financial crises, can draw new strength and vitality from the broader consensus and the possibility of coordinated action and shared objectives. The goal is to reach agreement on choices and action that will limit the impact of climate change and lay the basis for a less polluting and more efficient use of energy in the pursuit of development and well-being for peoples and nations.
