Informal meeting of Ministers for Competitiveness

Tomorrow, the Prague Congress Centre will host an informal meeting of Ministers for Competitiveness. The meeting, chaired by Minister Říman, will focus on the impacts of EU enlargement, the future of the internal market and reduction of the excessive administrative burden for enterprises.

The meeting will be divided into two thematic sessions. The morning session will focus on experiences gained after the enlargement of the EU in 2004 – 2007. The discussion will include an exchange of opinions on the continued elimination of the remaining obstacles to the internal market and the refusal of protectionism as a response to the economic crisis.

The afternoon session will deal with the reduction of the administrative load with emphasis on activities aimed to make the legislative environment more transparent and to reduce the excessive administrative load that encumbers businesses. According to a recent OECD study, removal of excessive regulation may lead to a 10% increase of work productivity in the next ten years.

The speakers at the meeting will include Günter Verheugen, Vice President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry, Mario Monti, President of Bocconi University, and Jan Mühlfeit, European Chairman of the Microsoft Corporation. The Troja Castle in Prague will host a formal dinner on the eve of the Competitiveness Council meeting.
