Minister Tošovský discusses telecoms package with Commissioner Reding

Czech Minister of Industry and Trade Vladimír Tošovský, who assumed office today, met with the Commissioner responsible for the information society and the media, Viviane Reding. They exchanged views on the current negotiations on the telecoms package.

Last week the European Parliament adopted an amended proposal concerning access to the Internet which goes beyond the general agreement that the Czech Presidency made in the framework of the negotiations between the Council of the European Union, the European Parliament and the European Commission on the wording of the telecoms package. The amended proposal does not have the support of EU Member States.

“The adoption of the amended proposal creates complications for further negotiations on a reform of the market for electronic communication. It is too early to tell what the solution might be. The Council must first carry out a thorough legal analysis and consider ways of proceeding further” said Czech Minister of Industry and Trade Vladimír Tošovský.

The agreement on the telecoms package was negotiated by an expert team of the Czech Presidency during the eleven trialogues with the European Parliament and the European Commission since February 2009. The negotiated wording of the package was received very positively by the Member States, the telecoms industry and a number of Members of the European Parliament.
