Prague hosts the Employment Summit today
The summit dedicated to the impact of the global crisis on employment in the EU Member States will be attended by representatives of the current social Troika (the Czech Republic, Sweden and Spain), the European Commission and the social partners.
The Czech Presidency expects the summit to assess the influence of existing economic instruments and social networks on preserving employment in the EU countries. President of the European Council Mirek Topolánek expressed the following view in this respect: “One of the instruments to alleviate the impact of the crisis on employment should be the strengthening of the principles of labour mobility and free movement of services, not excessive indebtedness of states.”
During their previous negotiations, the European Commission, the Council and the social partners, representing employers and employees, already agreed on the need to increase investment in science and research in order to raise employment and to provide support for retraining programmes in order to help the unemployed return to work.
The Czech Presidency believes that improving the business environment, e.g. by reducing the administrative burden, could help mainly SMEs, which account for around three quarters of European jobs.
