The “Back to School” initiative in the Czech Republic
Minister of Education, Youth and Sports Miroslava Kopicová supported the project of the European Commission and visited the Comprehensive School in her native town Kadaň. Six dozen of Czechs who work in European institutions also joined her in this initiative and visited Czech secondary schools.
The “Back to School” project is an initiative of the European Commission which aims to bring the European Union closer to secondary school students and give their institutions a face by means of meetings with Czech citizens working in EU institutions. On Friday 15 May 2009, more than sixty Czech officials returned to their old schools to speak about issues connected to the European Union and its future.
This year’s project, organised by the European Commission together with the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, included Czech Minister of Education Miroslava Kopicová, who spoke to students of the Kadaň Comprehensive School, and Minister for European Affairs Štefan Füle, who held a discussion in the Karlovy Vary Comprehensive School. The Representation of the European Commission in the Czech Republic was represented by its Head Irena Moozová, who shared her experience from working for the European Commission with students of the English College in Prague.
The “Back to School” initiative started in 2007 during the German Presidency of the EU Council and it was subsequently supported also by Slovenia and Portugal. Both the participants from the European Commission and students considered the joint discussion very inspiring and motivating. The employees of the European Commission succeeded in explaining their views on the European Union and share their own experiences from the EU institutions. In the Czech Republic this event was organised by the Representation of the European Commission in the Czech Republic in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic.
