The EU Military Committee Working Group/Headline Goal Task Force began its working meeting in the Czech Republic
On Tuesday 17 March 2009 the EU Military Committee Working Group/Headline Task Force began its working meeting in Prague, as part of the programme of the Czech EU Presidency.
This working group, currently chaired by the representative of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic, Lieutenant Colonel Imrich Luky, comprises military specialists in the area of acquisition and development of military capabilities. The EUMCWG/HTF working meeting will welcome participants from more than 20 EU Member States, representatives of the EU Military Staff, the European Defence Agency as well as specialists in the area of military capabilities of the Czech Armed Forces. The three-day negotiations of the specialists, who produce concept documents on the development of military capabilities for the supreme political and military bodies of the EU, will mainly focus on forces interoperability.
The meeting was opened in the Armed Forces House in Prague in the presence of Lieutenant General Vlastimil Picek, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic. In his speech, General Picek highlighted the unique role of the EUMCWG/HTF. According to General Picek, the Czech Republic as a member of both NATO and the EU seeks to prevent duplication of capabilities development between the two subjects. “In this respect we try to adopt a complex approach while supporting the mutual complementarity between the two subjects”, said the Chief of the General Staff.
The EUMCWG/HTF working meeting will include a visit to the 31st CBRN brigade in Liberec. During this visit on Wednesday18 March 2009, the members of the working group will receive information on the equipment and capabilities of this brigade, particularly with respect to the experience from the previous security engagement of its individual units during the Olympic Games and the NATO Summit, the cooperation with the integrated emergency response system of the Czech Republic and the performance of tasks in foreign missions.
