Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the EU on the forming of the new Government of Bangladesh
The European Union welcomes the successful completion of the Parliamentary Elections in Bangladesh on 29 December 2008 and the resulting appointment of the new Government of Bangladesh. It congratulates Sheikh Hasina on her electoral victory and appointment as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and pays tribute to the people of Bangladesh for their commitment to the holding of democratic, multi-party elections. The elections provide a basis for a new democratic development in Bangladesh.
The EU is encouraged that the transfer of power has begun in a smooth and constructive manner. It hopes for a stable, correct and effective functioning of the newly-elected Parliament and Government that can start addressing core issues for Bangladesh’s future such as strengthening the democratic system, rule of law, reestablishment of a fully independent judiciary, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The EU encourages the newly-elected authorities to take forward a number of reforms initiated by the Caretaker Government, namely those related to the Anti-Corruption Commission, National Human Rights Commission, Election Commission, Public Service Commission, and minority and refugee issues.
The European Union reiterates its support to the people of Bangladesh in their efforts to complete the establishment of fully democratic institutions. It is ready to assist them building a prosperous and stable society, based on the principles of democracy and the rule of law. The successful deployment of a full EU Election Observation Mission during the elections is an evidence of this continuing engagement and commitment.
