EU Presidency Statement concerning the Swiss referendum on the Agreement on the free movement of persons

The Presidency of the Council of the EU welcomes the positive outcome of the referendum held on 8 February 2009 by the Swiss Confederation.

The Presidency of the Council of the EU welcomes the positive outcome of the referendum held on 8 February 2009 by the Swiss Confederation on the prolongation of the Agreement on the free movement of persons and its extension to Bulgaria and Romania.

We congratulate the people of the Swiss Confederation for having expressed the wish for continuity in the co-operation with the EU based on the freedom of movement of persons, one of the fundamental European freedoms, which applies to all Member States of the European Union.
