The EU ministers have discussed the developments of the last few weeks. The General Affairs Council primarily dealt with the question of energy security in the light of events of the beginning of this year when gas supplies to the EU from Russia through Ukraine were cut off. On the agenda was diversification of energy sources, Member State solidarity and other related issues.
The External Affairs Council also discussed the gas crisis and dealt with the relations between Ukraine, Russia and the EU. Furthermore, the ministers debated recent events in the Middle East and finally the intention of the new American President Barack Obama to close the prison at Guantánamo.
