Safety and Health at Work in Europe in the 21st Century

  • Date: 27.4.2009 — 27.4.2009
  • Venue: Prague - Czech Republic
  • Category: Conferences and Seminars
  • Theme: Employment, Soc. Pol., Health and Cons. Affairs

The international conference on occupational safety and health (OSH) issues will focus on the fulfilment of the Community strategy 2007-2012 on health and safety at work.

Losses to society resulting from damage to health at work in the Member States account for an average of 3% to 4% of GDP. Therefore, these losses have not only a serious human dimension for the incapacitated and their families, but also negative repercussions for the economy of the Member States. Paying attention to the working environment and working conditions within the common European employment policy and social policy can make a substantial contribution to increasing the competitiveness of the European Union. Prague will host representatives of governments, employers and employees of the EU Member States who will focus on the following objectives:

  • Promoting changes in the behaviour of employees and encouraging employers to adopt a philosophy of protecting health at work.
  • A healthier, safer (and more productive) workplace: increasing the level of health protection and promoting the dissemination of examples of good practice regarding OSH among businesses.
  • Spreading awareness of OSH issues among small and medium-sized enterprises through economic incentives to encourage the implementation of the principles of prevention management at enterprise level.

The meeting will include the official announcement of the winners of a best practice competition, held as part of the European Campaign for Safety and Health at Work 2008 organised by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, based in Bilbao, Spain. Businesses from seven Member States will present their award-winning projects and point out their greatest benefits (e.g. the specific results of improvements, the costs and benefits of the project for the company).

During the conference, prizes will also be awarded for the best works of art in a national children’s drawing competition called “Dej na sebe pozor, mami, dej na sebe pozor, tati!” (Take care of yourself, Mum! Take care of yourself, Dad!). The competition was organised by the Occupational Safety Research Institute and the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of the Czech Republic as part of the 2008-2009 European campaign “Healthy Workplaces: Good for you. Good for business.”
