Conference of the European Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy
- Date: 19.5.2009 — 22.5.2009
- Venue: Průhonice - Czech Republic
- Category: Conferences and Seminars
- Theme: Environment
The meeting will discuss and generate recommendations on how to develop and better coordinate, at the European level, taxonomic research efforts to help European and developing countries to better assess and protect their biodiversity. It should give a clear picture of present state and future priorities in the field of taxonomic research. The meeting thus aims at addressing the taxonomic impediment on the one hand, but also linking taxonomic knowledge with other disciplines and policy needs worldwide. The meeting is organized by the Institute of Botany, Czech Academy of Sciences and by Ministry of the Environment.
The objectives of the meeting are to identify the key research questions that would allow taxonomy to better address policy needs. The themes of the meeting reflect questions policy makers might address to taxonomists:
1 - Taxonomic information: strategy and methods:
Inventory and identification (how new research might help to increase or improve the contribution of taxonomy to understanding what exists) & Understanding patterns and change (identifying the research needed to increase or improve the contribution of taxonomy to understanding the distribution of organisms, their conservation status and trends, and the migration of species).
2 - Taxonomy as a basis for ecological research and sustainable management of the biodiversity:
Ecological functions and services (research needed to help taxonomic research to contribute to better understanding of the functions and attributes of taxonomic groups) & Taxonomy, biodiversity and its conservation (management of biodiversity in a sustainable way).
3 - Taxonomy, potential users and capacity building of experts: Open access to information:
How research can improve the way in which taxonomic information gets from where it resides to where it is needed elsewhere in the world & Capacity building in biodiversity-rich countries and worldwide.
The EPBRS provides the opportunity for dialogue between high-ranking scientists and policy-makers from all the states that participate in the European Framework Programme. The Czech EPBRS meeting is upon invitation only. Invited participants are either official delegates appointed by their national representatives at the FP7 Programme Committee or experts invited by the national platforms.
Electronic conference
The meeting will be preceded by an electronic conference organized by BioStrat, to prepare the scientific input to the main themes of the meeting. The e-conference webboard is on line. The e-conference will take place between 14th of April and 5th of May 2009 and divided in three parts following the main topics of the meeting (see above).
