Media
Czechs are provided with objective, comprehensive news not only by three institutions governed by public law – Czech Television (ČT), Czech Radio (ČRo) and the Czech News Agency (ČTK), but also by a number of private media, which in the majority of cases strive to give impartial, balanced reports.
Television
Czech Television, the successor to Czechoslovak Television and as such providing regular broadcasting since 1954, currently operates four channels – two are analogue (ČT1 and ČT2) and two are digital (the news channel ČT24 and the sports channel ČT4 Sport).
The private TV NOVA television station, established in 1994, draws the highest viewing figures. TV PRIMA, formed three years later, began broadcasting in 1997. (Source: ATO – MEDIARESEARCH)
Radio
The public-service Czech Radio is the main provider of news on the radio. There are also numerous private radio stations, which tend to specialize in music programmes.
Daily press
The four main reputable dailies – MF DNES, Právo, Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny – wage a competitive war on the Czech market. MF DNES has the largest circulation; its main rival in terms of the number of readers is the Blesk tabloid. (Source: GfK Praha – Median)
Weekly news periodicals
The most popular weeklies in the Czech Republic are Týden and Respekt.
Online dailies
The most visited news servers are Novinky.cz, iDnes.cz and Aktualne.cz. (Source: NetMonitor – SPIR – Mediaresearch & Gemius).
