Telecommunications Ministers address EU information security

On Thursday the EU Ministers for Telecommunications met for the last time under the Czech Presidency.

They discussed the need to reinforce European network and information security and the future of the ENISA Agency.

“The European Union needs an efficient instrument to ensure network security and a stable Internet. This is why the Member States expressed themselves in favour of broadening the mandate of ENISA and increasing its funding”, said Czech Industry and Trade Minister and Telecommunications Council President Vladimír Tošovský.

At the meeting Commissioner Viviane Reding presented a report on the Internet of Things – an Action Plan for Europe, which is due to be adopted by the European Commission in the weeks to come. The Member States agreed that the development of the Internet of Things must go hand in hand with strict protection of personal data. However, the new technology can spread only if it is accepted by users and becomes the object of subsequent scientific research.

Ahead of the Council meeting, the Czech EU Presidency organised an informal ministerial debate on the future of the Telecommunications Package.
