EU press release on Burma/Myanmar at the end of the 11th Human Rights Council in Geneva
The EU has brought the attention of the Human Rights Council to the Human Rights situation in Burma/Myanmar on several occasions, in both regular and Special session, most recently at its March session this year and in our statements during the 11th Session of the Human Rights Council which ends this week.
The EU deplores the fact that political freedoms continue to be denied to the people of Burma/ Myanmar where Daw Aung San Suu Kyi continues to be detained by the military regime, pending trial on baseless charges in violation of international human rights law.
In just a few days time, on June 19, it will be Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s 64th birthday. The fact that once again she will spend her birthday arbitrarily detained is clear evidence of the regime’s continuing intent to exclude legitimate political actors detention from their so called “political process”
We reiterate the urgent call made repeatedly by the Council to the regime in Burma/ Myanmar to release all political prisoners without delay, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and to lift restrictions on political parties, as a prerequisite for an inclusive political process and national reconciliation.
The EU fully supports the call made by 5 UN human rights experts on 16 June for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to be released immediately and unconditionally on the grounds that her detention is arbitrary and in violation of international human rights law.
