Dagens Nyheter: EU puts pressure on Burma
The Swedish Daily Dagens Nyheter published an article about the meeting of the EU Troika with Burma, headed by the Czech Presidency. Upon concluding the meeting, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Kohout was not particularly optimistic about the potential release of political prisoners, in spite of the fact the EU requested that the Burma regime do so. According to Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt it may be difficult to perceive the meeting as a breakthrough; however, it is better to have direct and clear relations than none.

22 May 2009 Svenska Dagbladet: Cold approach to European elections in Eastern Europe
The Swedish daily brought an article devoted to the upcoming European elections. The article states that there is little interest in the elections to the European Parliament in Eastern Europe. However, it notes that there is one exception - the Czech Republic - whose national political situation, premature elections and EU Presidency resulted in a situation where more than half of the Czech voters are prepared to cast their votes in the European Parliament elections, which is double the electoral participation in 2004.

AFP: Czech PM wants far-right party banned
"The fight against extremism of all kinds is a part of this cabinet's work and you may expect this cabinet to take a strong stance on this issue. I am very disturbed by extremism. It is unacceptable for me," Czech Prime Minister Fischer said in an interview with AFP. He also added: "We must not be negligent, not only at the political level but also at the level of citizens. People must care, they must not listen to simple instructions, simple solutions... we all know how that ends."
The article notes that after Czech Television had aired a racist spot of the far-right National Party, Prime Minister Fischer urged Interior Minister Martin Pecina to act immediately. The article quotes Minister Pecina as saying in a website interview that he would "probably draft a proposal to dissolve this party".
