Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: Eastern Partnership
The leading German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung printed an article written by Czech PM Mirek Topolánek about the Eastern Partnership Summit to be held in Prague on 7 May. “The Eastern Partnership is one of the priorities of the Czech Presidency, but is not just a Czech interest. The fact that we follow up on projects started as part of the Polish and Swedish neighbourhood policy or, on different levels, as part of the Scandinavian partnership, means two things. On the one hand it is evident that some of the 27 EU countries directly seek the most efficient form of cooperation with the countries “East of Eden” (if the EU accepts this simile). On the other hand this gives Europe a better chance of success,” writes the President of the European Council and goes on to state that “the EU needs countries like Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, but also Belarus or Moldova for economic, political, security and energy reasons. And they need the EU for the same reasons and also as a role model and to give their own development some direction.”
