You can climb the Czech Republic’s highest mountain here or admire the unique allegoric Baroque statues in the Kuks Baroque complex. The Hradec Králové Region is a charming and attractive place for both its inhabitants and visitors, all year round.
There are a number of tourist locations, including extraordinary natural, cultural and historic sites. Among other things, the region is the birthplace of world-renowned painter František Kupka (1871-1957).
The region abounds with unique pieces of mostly Renaissance and Baroque architecture. The mystical Baroque complex of the Kuks hospital, the chateaux of Častolovice, Opočno and many others take the visitor for a stroll back in time. Each year the region becomes the destination of military history lovers, who re-enact the largest battle of the Prussian-Austrian war, which took place in 1866.
Labyrinths of sandstone cities
The Hradec Králové Region boasts one of the largest and most beautiful zoological gardens in Europe, ZOO Dvůr Králové, especially popular with children. The Czech Paradise, a fairy-tale landscape with labyrinths of sandstone cities, romantic ruins and picturesque specimens of folk architecture, is a frequent destination for tourists of all ages.
The ridges of the Orlické Hory and the Krkonoše dominate the northern border area of the Hradec Králové Region. The Krkonoše (the Giant Mountains), the most visited mountain range in the Czech Republic, welcome tourists all year round. The highest peak in the Krkonoše, Sněžka at 1602 m above sea level, is also the highest peak of the entire Czech Republic. In addition to nearly one thousand kilometres of marked hiking trails, there are also several hundred kilometres of biking trails in the Krkonoše. In winter, the visitor can enjoy romantic views of snow-capped mountains or take advantage of modern skiing facilities.
