This is the region where the first motor car in Central Europe – the Präsident – was manufactured at the end of the 19th century, and which later became famous for the production of Tatra cars. The Moravian-Silesian Region is typified by its industry, but nature or history lovers will also find plenty to see and do here.
The Moravian-Silesian Region is located in the North-East of the Czech Republic. It is a varied and diverse region, offering visitors many points of interest. The region is divided into six main tourist areas, each with its own specific character. The region’s borders are defined by two mountain ranges: the Beskydy, with their picturesque nature and folk architecture, and the Jeseníky, with Moravia’s highest peak Praděd (1491 m above sea level) and almost untouched nature. In the Poodří – Moravské Kravařsko sub-region with its charming Odra river flood plain, tourists can find a number of chateaux, castle ruins and urban conservation zones.

The area around Ostrava, and a part of the Těšínské Slezsko (Těšín Silesia) sub-region have a unique character due to the tradition of black coal mining and metallurgy. Unique technical monuments that are located here reflect these traditions. The Opavské Slezsko (Opava Silesia) sub-region is famous for its chateaux, historic towns and well-preserved military forts and fortification lines dating back to the nineteen thirties.
Ostrava is the largest city in the region, the third largest in the Czech Republic. In the 19th century, Ostrava was the most significant industrial centre of what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire; coal was discovered here as early as in 1763. The town of Kopřivnice is located about thirty kilometres from Ostrava. In 1897 the Kopřivnice coach factory produced a motorised coach called the Präsident, the first vehicle of its kind in the monarchy. In later years, Kopřivnice became famous primarily due to the production of Tatra cars.
Thanks to its location and diverse and beautiful countryside, the Moravian-Silesian Region can also offer a number of opportunities for sport, tourism and recreation. The area boasts a large number of stadiums, playgrounds, tennis courts and swimming pools. The region is ideal for downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, cycling, paragliding, horseback riding, golf, recreational flying, as well as water sports and spa tourism.
